Could ESCAPE-pain Help You? Peter's Story
At 73, Peter was finding everyday activities increasingly difficult due to osteoarthritis and previous knee problems, including a knee replacement. One of his biggest challenges was simply getting up from a chair.
After speaking to a First Contact physiotherapist, Peter enrolled on the six-week ESCAPE-pain programme at The Dene Hospital. The programme combines education sessions with tailored exercises to help people manage joint pain, improve mobility and build confidence.
Each week included practical advice on topics such as arthritis, healthy living and managing symptoms, followed by supervised exercise sessions. Participants worked at their own pace and were supported throughout by physiotherapists and fellow attendees.
For Peter, one of the biggest improvements was his ability to get up from a chair more easily.
"I started by trying to push myself out of a chair with my arms folded. By the end of the programme I was using a 7kg weight, and I could get out of chairs a lot easier."
Peter also enjoyed meeting others facing similar challenges and valued being part of a supportive group with people working towards their own goals.
Importantly, the programme helped him manage his arthritis without adding to the medication he already takes for other health conditions.
"Everybody goes at their own pace and the support is excellent."
Although Peter's arthritis hasn't disappeared, the improvements have lasted beyond the course, helping him stay active, independent and able to enjoy everyday life with greater confidence.
What is ESCAPE-pain?
ESCAPE-pain is a rehabilitation programme for people with arthritis. The programme combines education and exercise to help participants better understand their condition, manage pain, improve mobility and maintain independence.
How can I access the programme?
Patients interested in ESCAPE-pain can self-refer to the First Community Health & Care's Musculoskeletal (MSK) Service. Following assessment, the MSK team can advise whether ESCAPE-pain is appropriate for you and discuss the support available.
Alternatively, if you are registered with Modality East Surrey, you can submit an appointment request via Rapid Health to speak with one of our First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs). They can assess your symptoms, provide expert advice and discuss the most appropriate treatment and support options, including referral pathways where needed.
