When patients think about booking an appointment, they often ask to see a GP. But when it comes to medicines, treatment reviews and many long-term conditions, our Clinical Pharmacists are often the best people to help. 

This month also marks World Pharmacists Day (25 September), an opportunity to recognise the vital role pharmacists and pharmacy technicians play in keeping patients safe, supporting long-term conditions and helping people get the most from their medicines. We'd like to thank our Pharmacy Team for the expertise, care and support they provide to our patients every day. 

At Modality East Surrey Medical Practice, our Pharmacy Team works behind the scenes and directly with patients every day, helping ensure medicines are safe, effective and tailored to individual needs. 

Experts in medicines 

Clinical Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals with specialist knowledge of medicines and how they affect different health conditions. Many are qualified independent prescribers, meaning they can assess patients, discuss treatment options and make changes to medication where appropriate. 

Their role allows patients to access expert support quickly, while ensuring they receive care from the professional best placed to help.

More than just prescriptions

They can also review blood test results, identify and help manage side effects, liaise with hospital specialists and support patients who take multiple medications. 

Sometimes a small adjustment to a medication routine can make a big difference to a patient's health and wellbeing. These conversations are an important part of helping patients get the most benefit from their treatment. 

Annual medication reviews: why they matter 

If you're invited to attend a medication or chronic disease review, please do book your appointment. Many patients hear from our Pharmacy Team when their annual review is due, and these appointments play an important role in keeping your treatment safe and effective. 

Reviews help ensure your medicines remain appropriate for your needs, allow us to monitor any long-term conditions, complete any necessary health checks or blood tests, and help avoid delays to future prescriptions. They also provide an opportunity to discuss any questions, concerns or side-effects you may be experiencing and make sure you're getting the most benefit from your treatment. 

Pharmacy Technicians 

Our Pharmacy Technicians work closely with the Clinical Pharmacists and GP team to keep medication records up to date, process clinical correspondence and support the safe management of medicines. This means you may occasionally receive a call from a member of the Pharmacy Team to discuss your medications, arrange a review or help us keep your records up to date.
